The main reason for the high rate of fire is to allow a short computer controlled burst in a very small area, even while flying at high speed. Where the A10 could hose an area the size of a football field, the F35 could theoretically fire 5 rounds in a area the size of a Soup Plate. Theoretically. The CF105 Arrow was probably the most advanced fighter/ bomber of its day. With currenr upgrades itcwoukd still be a formidable fighter. Yes the F-35's and the F-22's are designed to be "Stealth" fighters first but each can be used in a more conventional manner like the F-16's ; the F-15's when Stealth isn't needed as much so the USAF could have a very large attack capability.
