Welcome back to the our channel for a discussion about the F-35B VTOL vs. the F-35C, as well as how aircraft carrier launch and recover their aircraft. "In recent years air forces around the world have been exploring arresting cables", you say? If "recent years" includes the 1960s (that's 60 years ago!), you are correct. the F-104G posessed and used a tail hook for emergency use. NATO runways have been fitted with arresting gear since the 1960s and aircraft like the F-104, F-4, F-5, F-15, F-16 all have tailhooks! These aircraft are brilliant. I have a friend in the RAF who was lucky enough to be one of the first British pilots to fly the F35. He said it’s the most advanced aircraft he’s ever flown. Fun Fact so other don’t have to research this: Steam is used for propulsion and arresting of aircraft because the aircraft carriers are Nuclear powered and convert water to steam to drive turbines so there is plenty of excess steam available.
