It’s a very rare occasion that a gun could even work in a modern dogfight, but the fact is that it does happen, albeit once in a thousand sorties. Then there is pilot state of mind. The F4 Phantom was designed without a gun because we had brought online the latest and greatest air to air missiles, and the planes designers felt it was too expensive and unnecessary. The first time a missile failed or the pilot fired them all, the pilots expressed horror at being vulnerable and pilot morale plummeted. A gun was added, and it simply has been a dead issue ever since. The issue may be revisited in the future, but for now, all fighters, even the invulnerable F22, are designed with a gun. I feel there’s no need to revisit the issue. You’re not going to change the pilots minds, and it’s their lives on the line anyway. To gun or not to gun will be an issue soon dealt with, as the military wants to built the sixth generation fighter with a new optional pilot. I prefer it built with no cockpit to save huge amounts of money, space, and an ability to fly as no human could bare. The future will be very interesting, no doubt! Exciting, don’t you think?
